The New Socially Aware Nokia C5

The world’s number one mobile phone maker Nokia has officially announced the upcoming Nokia C5 that has been on the rumor mill of mobile communities online since even before the 2010 Mobile World Congress.  We had hope to see it in the flesh at the event but Nokia was the least forthcoming of future handsets among the Big Five and the C5 never figured in the event.

At first glance, the C5 carries the conventional candybar form that exudes a simple stylish elegance that should set it apart from the many candybar mobile phones in the market.  But apart from heralding the new Nokia C-series focused on the social networking markets, the C5 is just a conventional handset that had no bragging rights to any feature.  Had we not known it runs the Symbian S60 v3.2 OS, would could have mistaken it for just a mid-range feature phone.

Socially Aware Features

The C5 is a 3G and HSDPA/HSUPA data connectivity and a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE class 32 on the 2G network.  High speed connectivity benefits the online experience immensely making instant access to social network sites, media sharing ties and just about all online activities a real breeze and worth your while.

Its phonebook features SNS integration as it shows who among your contact have Facebook and other SNS profiles so you can launch your social networking right from the phonebook.  Its home screen allows intact access to Facebook with three of your SNS friends accessible right from the homescreen.

You also get location sharing to your Facebook with its GPS and Ovi Maps with walk and drive direction navigation. Media sharing over YouTube and Flickr as well as downloading apps from the Ovi Store benefits form it high speed capabilities.

Conventional Features

A petite  body weighing a pocket friendly 89.3 grams and measuring 112 x 46 x 12.3 mm has room only for a small 2.2 inch TFT LCD QVGA screen with 16 millions colors.  Imaging gets a conventional 3.2 megapixel with LED flash, fixed focal length focusing, 15fps VGA video recording and a secondary front facing camera for 3G video calls.

There’s no WiFi for hotspot surfing as you only get Bluetooth 2.0 and microUSB 2.0 for local data transfer.  Its multimedia feature gets media playback support for popular audio and video files as well as stereo FM radio with RDS. Stereo listening comes from a built-in IHF stereo speakers, a Bluetooth A2DP support for wireless earphones and a 3.5mm AV jack for wired high fidelity headphones.

There’s an internal memory storage of 50 MB with 128 MB RAM and nearly unlimited phonebook fields and entries.  This can be expanded up to 16 GB from its microSD slot.  The handset comes with a standard 1050 mAh BL-5CT Li-Ion battery that gets your up to a generous 12 hours of talk time and 26 days on standby when fully charged.

Available 2nd Quarter

The press kit released states availability starting 2nd quarter of the year and should ship to its European and Asian markets supporting the 3G dual band UMTS at 900 and 2100.  US availability may not be forthcoming because of this. The new Nokia C5 will be available in a choice of either white or warm grey and is expected to fetch a SIM-free price of €135 before subsidies and taxes. You’ll get a free 2 GB microSD card included in its retail package and will come with access to the Ovi Store and a free GPS navigation.
